    Races and Starting/Leveling Zones

Has Anet announced anything regarding racial starting and leveling zones? Specifically, if say a Charr and an Asura (or whatever races really) want to pal around throughout the game...are they required to or restricted to their own specific zones or will they be able to meet up and quest together at any stage?

It seems like in most gameplay videos thus far, I've only really seen one specific racial grouping doing quests and such, not a whole lot of mixed groups.

You can work together with other races, yes. Anet have been pretty clear that they don't want races to be picked because of gameplay advantages, which would have to include the (in)ability to work with others. The question is more so when we will be able to meet up. Every race starts elsewhere and it's unknown (to my knowledge) how much effort is required to go to another race's starting area.

The reason is you've only seen one specific racial group in videos is because that's the way the Gamescom demo of GW2 was made (which is where your GW2 videos are coming from). At Gamescom you could either be a brand new human character at level 1 or a charr at level ~50. They did this to show people the game at a more high end and also so they could show us a stage of the "Shatterer" boss fight, which they seem very proud of (looking at videos, rightfully so). Therefore, humans and charr working together was impractical on the GW2 demo.

Each race will have its own starting area/home region, but yes, it should be very well possible to move from your own current location to the home region of another race, to meet up with your friend there. Given how large the game world is, it may take you a while to get there, though...

Hrm. I'm sure I read they wanted it to be easy to go to your friends' starting areas and vice versa. I wonder if I can find that again.

I found it for you . Here is what Jeff Grubb said in one of the interviews:

When you start as a human, your starting area is Divinity’s Reach. And as you grow up, you interact with other races. Now if you’re a Charr and your friend’s playing Asura, you can still play together. It’s not as though you’re stuck in a newbie zone without any other races. We allow contact and make easy transits between the major cities.

Probably by Asura gates or something.

If Asura gates is the solution for travelling between the main cities/starting zones, it might be a much more enjoyable time in the game. Say you have 2 earlier charr characters, and make another one, traveling to the norn area for a different starting experience. And when the game launches we can have a low level party!

I believe each race will play their own area until level 10 (it's the break point where every next level requires the same amount of experience). At lvl 10 players are planned to stumble upon the first dungeon (1 dungeon every 10 levels), which will probably be the spot where all races meet.

That actually does sound rather probable. Sort of like pre-searing -> searing or any kind of tutorial area and then branching out.

Frankly, I very much doubt it. We've seen the human tutorial in several of the demos, and it's definitely not a 10-level thing. When you're through the tutorial, you'll still be level 1 or 2. I don't think they will want to force players to only play with people their own race until they are level 10. It's a large persistent world (unlike the instanced zones we had in GW1), I don't think there will be any limits on when you can meet other people.

Also Dungeons are completely optional side content, and I don't think they have anything to do with when the races can meet and team up. It wouldn't make sense to force people to do their own dungeon just to 'unlock' the ability to team up with people of different races.

I believe Salx55's idea (Asura gates in all the major cities/starting areas) hits the mark a lot closer.
