Thread: Server locations? Australia/Oceania?

    Question Server locations? Australia/Oceania?

Any news on if there will be Australian or oceanic servers for GW2? I know a lot of Australians interested in this game, most of us coming from GW1 that are very worried about this.

GW2 is looking a lot more reliant on your ping with a very heavy emphasis on movement, positioning and visual reactions. 3 of the things that never really worked very well for us at 250 ping in GW1 as it was. I have my doubts that we will even be able to play GW2 properly from here at all.

Would be very sad if I couldn't play the sequel to my favorite game properly. Especially with how awesome the evolution of GW2 is sounding.

Yea I was thinking the same thing actually (being in NZ). With GW being a very pvp orientated game (or should I say, a very strong pvp player base) those affects are compounded as other players use them against you, and you work against yourself vs them!

Hopefully wowtunnels will release GW2 support! That program was a godsend when I was playing WoW.

    Also, welcome to the forums!

EDIT: Altho GW and GW2 majority of followers are from Europe, and most of them from Germany. And with the stretch in languages I'd assume there would be EU and US servers at the very least.
Having an oceanic server actually based in the region hasn't been a popular choice for many MMO companies in the past.

    Thanks.

There is one thing about the MMO market in our region lacking oceanic servers though. From what I've seen basically any MMO that does actually host an oceanic server seems to get incredibly popularity here.

I would love if GW2 had one because it would really boost the popularity for our region. There's already a lot of interest going around for this game here that I have seen. I think a server here would really tip people on the verge of purchasing right over the edge.

Going by the recent TV adds for games, any game that advertises on our screens ends up getting a massive amount of sales here (even if the game turns out bad and flops, like Alien Vs. Predator). Would probably be another good plan to get the game really popular down here.

You have 250 ping? I'm jealous, I'm getting an average of ~400 ping from Melbourne ):

Anyway, I can't say anything for certain, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that there will be an asia pacific/Oceanic server. I even remember hearing that your account gets dedicated to a certain set of servers and you would have to pay a small fee to transfer to another geographic location. *however* that was a very, very long time ago and the idea is likely to have been thrown out since alot of people would get mad.

Well, I should say I have an average of 250 ping. But a lot of my time is spent playing alone or with only 1 local friend in the party.

Though PvP I would say is generally around the 300-400 mark on average. Sometimes up to 500.

My average ping in GW1 was like 17. I don't know why it is most of the time that good.

Because you're geographically close to a server and/or you have optic fibre (data is transfered as light = very fast pings. Only real delay is inside routers and switches) going between ISP's.

Australia's internet is really disgraceful, we are laying out optic fibre as part of a National broadband network but it should have been done a long time ago. We've also got politicians trying to intervene with budget cuts, but put simply, they're politicians, not IT technicians, so they have no idea what they're dealing with. Same with the general public, they see the money going into it but just don't understand how vital it is, to your average joe and big companies alike. I understand there's some problems with a lack of co-operation with Telstra as well.

When you add that we're geographical in the middle of nowhere with no one near us on the planet, and that our country is geographically huge on it's own, you've got a latency nightmare.
