    Naming your Sylvari

Hello all, i have a query

I want my Sylvari to have a real Sylvari type name, but i'm under the impression that Sylvari do not have surnames. So how do i get around this when i create my character?

Obviously my first name will be of irish origin, with some meaning that i think relates to my character, but what do i do beyond my first name?

In Guild Wars 2 it will be possible to pick a name that is a single word so you won't "need" to have a surname like in Guild Wars. However if your name is taken before you get to it you might need to pick something else to be able to use it. When trying to pick a name without a surname I've usually gone with a description. So instead of being Caithe you could be Caithe the Graceful or Caithe of the Grove or Caithe the Firstborn or something else to keep the first name without relying on the surname. Not sure that will provide enough variety, but maybe sylvari week will reveal some more about naming conventions to open up more possibilities.

I wish in european GW2 we could use japanese symbols But I guess it ain't gonna happen.

But I'll definitive name my character, whether it'll be human or sylvari, something japanese sounding.

Sylvaris should have names relating to nature.

f.e.: I could name my sylvari Hana (means flower) or Happa (means leaf) or something around these lines.

I imagine that's because most people's computers aren't capable of making those characters in the U.S./Europe. Would suck to not be able to add, ignore, etc. people because you couldn't type their name, lol.

Yeah i was looking at all types of flower names until i read GoA, now i'm taking my name from old Irish origins. Maybe something like 'Maeve' which is irish and means intoxicating, would be a good Sylvari Necro name. Or maybe Ossia for a Ranger, which means 'little deer'

you should still be able to right click their names in the chat and than ignore them.
And I think, all PCs in the western world are capable of these characters. You just need the fonds and a bit of experimenting on your system to type them.
Appearently writing japanese characters direct in EdenEternal doesn't work, but it should be able to do so in GW2. If not, GW2 would suck for most japanese players in the aspect of giving names to characters.

Unfortunately I don't like too many Gaelic/Irish names, LOL. If I do make a sylvari I will struggle to come up with a lore-appropriate name, I think.

Most people wouldn't want to wrangle with their keyboards to get it to work though, I'm imagining, lol. And I personally would much rather call you something I can pronounce (like Risugami) than a string of Japanese symbols that mean nothing to me. :P

I'm 100% sure that the name of my Sylvari will be...

    oh wait...

    I really don't plan to have a Sylvari :P

Okey talking about the topic now: Hazel, I agree with you that Sylvari names will be very strange if people start giving them surnames and, lucky you, surnames will not be required on GW2 as Kaden covered already.
I find Celtic/Gaelic/Breton names very suitable, Latin words as Haresean suggested are very cool too. Everything that remotely reffers to nature + knowledge will fit right into it.

But this is the way that everybody will do. As Norns will have Nordic names, Humans will have Normal Human names or adjectives, Charr will usually have something related to their feline nature and Asura... well, Asurans will have strange names, I think.

Anyway, I would aim for something more remarkable. Sylvaris are new, adaptible, full of knowledge but lacking experience, they are 'innocent' to the ways of the world, in a symbolic and interpretative manner of speaking. If they were really here, on Earth, I don't think they would "name" themselves but lots of nicknames would emerge from those who live with them. That would be, from my view, the first "individualization" to their personalities.

Animals, plants, vines, nature... lots of names will come from that. But a Sylvari named "Bummer" will have a good story to tell, and her name will not be forgotten so easily by the ones who meet her.

I think you understand what I mean. It's your choice but since the topic question is "closed", I thought it would be appropriate to change the subject a little.

    Hugs!

    Bahayur [Yuri]
