    We need open world pvp

Guild Wars can have good pvp, as long as it's open world. I say this because it would make guilds themselves more ideal, and it would bring a lot more players in that enjoy pvp. It is something to seriously look at. Sure pve can be fun, but the real fun comes from fast paced pvp - and having good balanced battles set up for you is nice, but creating battles or having them become created is what brings games like WoW loyal players.

Well, keep in mind there is "WorldvWorldvWorld" PvP which sort of simulates what you're looking for. Or, since I see you've played AoC, it's like Sieges and mini objectives and some version of Bori that didn't suck and didn't actually punish you for PvPing all in one big map.

I enjoy world PvP, but imo the way GW2 sets it up it's going to simulate that very well. You just won't have people sending you "lolfag" tells (or questioning the size of your manhood) when PvP happens, because they will be in that zone specifically to PvP.

If you haven't had a chance to read up on it, here is a link on what we know for sure about world PvP so far.

I'd also disagree that it's PvP servers that creates WoW's loyal fanbase. Imo it's mostly time invested and lower system requirements.

Notice how they dodge the question in the ComicCon panel about whether itll be instanced or a zone?

I don't think there will be open PvP in GW2 like there is in WoW because The races are planned the join together, so there will be no space für race based-open PvP. It would be stupid for allies to crush each other.

The only way for open PvP would be order of whispers vs Durmand thingie vs Vigil. That again would be silly when, i.e. when you join vigil and your friend from the early maps joins the order of whispers you would have to fight each other.

It could make sense lore wise (not that everything in a game should be dictated by lore... GW1's map travel for example), since the races have hostilities. Asura seem to hate everyone, Norn would fight anyone for the honour and the story, Humans in the real world have no problem killing anything that doesn't look like exactly like us, Charr are a pretty angry bunch in general, and Sylvari... Meh, maybe they're curious about death?

I don't see any need for this since we have WvWvW though, which effectively is open world PvP (to my understanding of what open world PvP is, at least).

I'd also disagree that it's PvP servers that creates WoW's loyal fanbase. Imo it's mostly time invested and lower system requirements.
I doubt you could simplify WoW's success to 2 or 3 things. There's also many other things like the constant large updates, the art style of the game, the significance of going into a world which already means something to you (for those that played Warcraft 3) and of course the game mechanics. IMO that's why GW2 could be so succesfful, because they aren't just improving one aspect of the genre when compared to WoW, but they're bulldozing the MMO industry and working their way from the ground up.

That's because it's actually irrelevant. If you have enough people in an instance, it will *be* a zone... and that's what WvWvW is. It's one large persistent area where 3 servers are battling each other. Everyone who enters that area, will see all the other people there. Is it separated from the pve area? Yes. Does that make it instanced? Not in my perception.

As for open world pvp... I disagree with you, Ragnar. Having open world pvp in the standard persistent world of GW2 would be counter productive to everything ArenaNet are trying to achieve. The whole idea with dynamic events and the lack of traditional quests, is community building and an identical sense of purpose for everyone. Everyone in the open world has the same goals (to fight the enemy npcs), and everyone in the world knows that they can trust each other and rely on each other, and it's in everybody's best interest to resurrect each other when they're down. The worst thing you can do, is stand aside and simply not participate (in which case the system will ignore you as well).
If there are people among those who are there not to help, but just to analyze your playstyle so they can challenge you to a duel and finish you off afterwards, that changes the whole level of trust and perception of the people in that world... thus deteriorates the target of community building that ArenaNet has set themselves (and I'm not even talking about an open world where you're allowed to simply attack anyone who walks by, I think such a system is highly undesirable in any pve world)

Also, Ruse is right, in that most of what open world pvp can offer, is already present in the WvWvW environment. You can go in whenever you want, and battle any player you want. What else is it you feel you're missing?

I think duels should be able in GW2. Not in dynamic events, but outside of them it's okay.

And in WvWvW I don't think you can fight ppl from your own server, so you can't battle any player you want, just the ones from the other servers.

You're right... not the ones from your own server. Though theoretically, you could switch servers if you really wanted to fight them...

As for duels... ArenaNet have said at some point that they would look into the possibilities for duels in the future, but that they would definitely not be in at release.

I'm assuming that minigame-style instanced PvP will be vs. people from your own server, though. Or have I been wrong on that all along?

There are some old rivals from other games (AoC namely) that had talked about rolling on the same server as us come launch, thinking it'd be fun to fight on the same side for a change in WvWvW...but still having the fun of facing off in the 5v5 PvP.

Yes, 5v5 competitive pvp should definitely be possible against groups on your own server. Not sure if you can also do competitive (5v5) pvp matches against people on other servers, they haven't talked about that yet.
