Even if they don't get mounts, it would be cool if there where trains or wagons or airships on pre-determined routes that you could hop on just for fun.

Ye i can understand you guys who dont like mounts someone should tell that to the rest of the world aswell. You dont need cars, planes, boats or trains, you can just walk. Would even give us a more healthy world . LOL xD People have been using "mounts" for hundreds even thousends of years. So in a envirement as Tyria it just seems strange that the ppl there dont use a better way to travel then on foot. I agree that waypoints are fine if you want to get somewere realy fast and dont care about what you might see on the road. I love games where i can sit on a horse back and just look at everything around me and still not use "hours" to get there.

Comparing mounts to cars is kind of a silly analogy, but I'll go with it. So how long do you think people would drive around in cars if they had teleportation that was safe, fast, and relatively inexpensive? Probably not long. That's essentially what the Tyrian's have with the Asuran Gates. That's why there is not really a need for mounts in this game.
Besides, why do you need mounts when almost every class has a speed boost option? heh :P
Mounts aren't for the general population, mounts are for people with crap-loads-of-gold and nothing to spend it on. People collect mounts for the sake of having rare and unique aesthetic values. Hence why people will spend hundreds of thousands of gold for Spectral Tigers.
And for people that love to collect things. They'll spend hours upon hours running dungeons over and over again trying to get a rare mount off a boss that have less than 1% chance to drop. They don't NEED it but they WANT it and they'll support the game by logging in to try and GET it.
It's a carrot, a carrot that people LOVE. It's win-win. People can work towards their collection and the developers just sit back and watch as the system sells itself. Not to mention the value of being able to put mounts on the cash shop that have extremely unique aesthetic values. And the people that don't care about it don't have to worry about it.
Just like how I don't care or know anything about cars. I have my car, it works, and I'm good with it. I don't know hardly anything about cars. My best friend, has 3 cars. 2 of which he built from scratch and is currently working on a 3rd for a total of 4 cars. Why? Because he wanted to.
Similar to how rich people have car collections. They don't NEED more than one car, but they have them anyway.
Before they add mounts I'd rather they just remove the speed decrease when an enemy aggros on you. What's the point of that? It's so annoying when you're trying to get somewhere and suddenly you're running half as fast cause a spider noticed you...
I've spent hours upon hours in WoW collecting mounts. Sure I could get around on foot just fine or get there faster with portals in neutral cities or flight paths, but I'd much rather enjoy the view while riding on my mount I so eagerly went after. You don't want to know how many weeks I spent waiting in the spot where the lost time proto-drake (I think that's what it was called?) would spawn so I could kill it and claim it as a mount...
I think mounts would be a great addition. I always loved collecting them in WoW. It's also something they can easily use to make profit by selling rarer ones on the gemshop, as long as there is also a variety of mounts available ingame.
They should, however, not be useable in WvW, as it's already way too easy to get around the maps (assuming that mounts would buff your speed).
While i understand they awesomeness of riding and collecting mounts. (amatuer collecter here) I look at it like this: If mounts are never introduced into GW2, you would never know that feeling and in turn never have to wonder what it would be like. So you are then just stuck either walk/running through the terrain, or using the WPs'.
I personally wouldn't like mounts in this game only because Anet did take the time to have the environment viewed. (Vista's) and having a mount take's away from the environment and focus's it on the player. imagine viewing your favorite piece of tyria and a wild pegasis-rainbow unicorn of zappidos appears. Streaking through with its flaming rainbow twillight sparkle trails and lightining foot steps. (exaggerated effects for drammatic effect) well now your are completely distracted from the view. (even tho twillight and sunrise do the same streaking effect, but are legendary so they are excused for now)
p.s. i think im going to ask for a drawing request for the mount i just made up.
